Greetings one and all,
Well, it’s been a while, but I’m back in a small way. Life has happened, but going forward I’ll be trying to publish articles a little more frequently again. Which shouldn't be difficult at this point at least, as I believe this is this year's first article.
So with that addressed, let's get on to what I will be talking about: the new Necromunda Spyrers. I’ll cover the models in this article, and then in the next one, I'll go into the rules. But to start, we’ll take a quick look at the book where the rules to play this new gang can be found.
Necromunda: Book of Desolation.
This is such an interesting book, with plenty of new lore, a new campaign, two new gangs in not only the Spyre Hunting Parties, but also the Malstrain gangs as well, and a swath of new scenarios, allies and tactics which are great additions to the game. But the question is, do you need this book? Well, if you’re planning on playing anything from it, then yes of course you do! But if I'm honest, it's mostly just a good resource for lore. Which I’m totally about. (The Spyre Hunters gang I'm planning on building is also a reason for me.)
Spyre Hunters gang tactics cards
Along with the book, there are also Spyre Hunters gang tactics cards available in a pack of 26 cards, which has 18 tactics cards and 8 blank ganger cards, to help build your gang. Though as the gang tactics are all in the back of the Book of Desolation anyway, to be honest, there isn't really a need to buy these unless you want a physical deck of cards.
Now onto the models themselves.
Malcadon, Yeld, and Jakara Spyre Hunters
These models look amazing and I really enjoyed building them. However, at £31.50, I would expect the various hunters to have their full weapon loadout available, not just the basic equipment. The Malcadon, with the choice between Slashing Claws or a Toxin Whip, is the one that springs to mind as the is nothing in the kit that even comes close to looking whip-like, so you may need to raid an Escher box for this weapon if you plan on using it.
I shouldn't complain too much though as this is a minor gripe I have with these models. They are still very cool.
Orrus Spyre Hunter
The Second of the Spyre Hunters boxes and also priced at £31.50. They are also some very cool looking models, but I did find the Orrus to be more of a challenge to build than the previous box (lots of small fiddly pieces and fat fingers are not a good combination).
The Orrus are a lot better than the pervious box, this has all the options available to the Orrus so in my opinion this is a very good set
Conclusion
I really like the Spyre Hunters. They add a nice amount to the lore and fill the niche of an elite, high-tech gang very nicely. If I had one complaint however it's how the gang has been packaged. I would have liked to see all the gang in a single box at a slightly increased price; £55 for an all-in-one set would have made them far more accessible, rather than splitting the gang in half and selling them in two separate lots.
